Know Your Course

Welcome to the Prospect Park Disc Golf Course in Broolyn, New York. Prospect Park was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted. The course takes you through the scenic Nethermeade and the Peninsula. Thousands of years ago, the ice age stopped right in the park. In 1776, the British charged through the park in the Battle of Brooklyn.

There are many historic and interesting sites along the way. The course passes the Music Pagoda, the Audubon House, the Maryland Monument, and skirts the outside of the old Quaker Cemetery. The park is along the Eastern Flyover. It is home to an indigenous population of Red Tailed Hawks. We’ve seen a blue heron, a crane and also an egret. Our favorite critter discovered along the Course was Carl the Crawfish.

This is a public park, not a designated disc golf course. Wait until the fairway clears completely before playing. If the hole looks clogged by "mokes", move on to the next hole or the "alt" hole we may have set up. Play safe.

We have found that the best time to play the course is on mornings between 9:30 and 12:00. During the spring, summer and fall, early weekday afternoons also offer excellent golfing opportunities. During the winter months, you often have the park to yourself at any time of the day, and can easily glide through all 20 holes.

A word about the targets. Some of the targets are easier to hit than standard pole holes. Some are more difficult. Where the target is a tree, only the main area of the trunk beneath the branches counts. The roots, leaves or branches do not count. Where the target is a park fixture such as a street light or water fountain only the metal portion is the target; the cement base does not count. Targets must be hit on the fly.

Prospect Park Disc golf

On the course

I haven’t been on the course for the last two weeks, Last I checked the tees and targets were all well marked. Hole 9 Update: There is a small red temporary fence on the right side of this hole after the large pine tree. Is this inbounds or out: ? You make the call. Hole 16 Update: On one end of the hole, we will be moving the tee box to the side of the tree closer to the path. This will allow a better run-up, especially when the ground stuff grows in. [Thanks Brian] On the other end, nature continues to take its unabated course. At last check, there was still a large broken tree fallen to the right of the hole. As to the hole itself, it just keeps getting smaller. Hole 19 Update: There is a brand new paved “tee pad.” Lost Discs: As the weather becomes colder, the ground cover disappears. Often, discs lost in the summer are found in the fall and winter. Keep your eyes peeled when you’re in the rough on either side of Hole 9/14, and to the left side of the bridge on Hole 6. Write your name / tel. number on your disc. [That means you Nick.] E-mail me and I’ll try to find its mama. Feature

THE ENDLESS SUMMER

Right. Not in Brooklyn. We got your fall. We got your winter. We got your gusts. And we got your snow. But as we say on the front page of the web site, “It’s a Good Day for a Golf.” Now don’t get me wrong. I love summer as much as the next guy. Wearing shorts on an 80 degree day. Not carrying all that winter stuff in my bag - it’s damn heavy as it is. Best of all, I love the late summer nights. Plenty of golfing left at 6:00. Although we prepare to leave all this behind for a few months, it doesn’t mean that disc golf stops. PPDGC is a four season course. In fact, fall and winter provide many great golfing opportunities. Fall is great in the park. The weather is somewhat cooler and the park is full of color. As the leaves fall, many shots that are blocked by foliage in the Summer, begin to open up. One color that comes to the fore is yellow. This is especially so when the yellow leaves coat the ground of the first three holes. Leave those yellow drivers at home. Fall also means watching your disc till it lands. I’ve lost discs that have just buried themselves in the leaves. When Winter comes, many New Yorkers begin to hibernate. Wrong, wrong, wrong. Winter golf is exhilarating. The park takes on a special sort of glow in the winter mornings. In the other seasons we share the park with a variety of mokes. They picnic near the holes. They congregate on the fairways. They wheel their double wide strollers and just park ‘em where you need to go. In the winter, they all stay home. Come to play on a cold winter morning and you have the park to yourself. Play 20, 40, or 60 uninterrupted holes. Wear comfortable layers of clothing, bring a thermos of your favorite hot beverage, and spend the day golfing with friends. When you tell your co-workers what you did during the weekend, they’ll all think you’re nuts. Just smile and think of that chilly birdie. Yep, Summers over, welcome to the rest of the year.

Interactive top five

To achieve the full benefits of this top five list, go to the website and print out five pictures of Big Dave from the Course Ams section. Then, go to town with these spiffy new hairdo’s. Which one do you think he looks best in:

  1. Mullet
  2. Flaming Red Mohawk [like the guy from the Casualties]
  3. Albert Einstein wild
  4. Oscar Gamble Afro
  5. Whatever you want to do. Be wacky wild.
Closing Well, that’s it for now. Hope to see you all on the course. Come rain, come snow, come gusts, nothing should keep the intrepid disc golfer from his appointed rounds.   MEL
